UCLA came from humble beginnings and has become the only university with the most applications in the nation. Optimistic perspectives and broad thinking has been the catalysts that allow UCLA to redefine what is possible. Divisions and Undergraduate Education

UCLA has five divisions Physical Sciences, Humanities, Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Undergraduate Education. In total there are 40 specialized programs, 34 departments and 109 undergraduate majors and graduate degrees in teaching and research in both sciences and liberal arts.

UCLA Applied Linguistics Ranks in Top 5{a2c37d88ded120284487fe8b7dbd509abea597470a6d6b542d10cde4915c36a1}

The National Research Council’s (NRC) 2011 assessment of the top United States PhD programs published in the fall of 2010 ranked UCLA’s Applied Linguistics Department among the top 5{a2c37d88ded120284487fe8b7dbd509abea597470a6d6b542d10cde4915c36a1} of all programs in the linguistics field in 2011. The NRC’s definition of the requirements in the linguistics field consists of several different programs such as Applied Linguistics, Language and Communication Disorders, Cognitive Science, Modern Languages, Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. There are three doctoral programs that include Musicology, History of Archaeology and UCLA Humanities that rank at least third in each of their fields than other universities across the nation.

Majors and Minors

UCLA has 126 undergraduate majors which are in five divisions.

The College of Letters and Science

The liberal arts curriculum starts by analyzing issues, training students to think, pose questions, and to write creatively. Students concentrate on various fields in depth. There are over 100 majors in four academic divisions which are Life Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Physical Sciences.
